Looking at the World
Geography is about places, people, weather, animals, crops, transportation, homes, jobs, the environment, and much more. The word geography is made up of two parts: the prefix geo– is the Greek word for "Earth" and –graphy means "something written or recorded so it can be seen." So, geography is any information written or drawn about Earth and everything on it.

Maps are just one part of geography. They show natural landforms on Earth's surface, such as rivers, mountains, deserts, oceans, islands, and forests. Maps can also show structures made by humans, such as bridges, tunnels, dams, airports, and highways. Maps help us see how places are related to one another by distance, direction, and size.
