Use multiplication as a check for division
Objectives
Student will be able to:
check division quotients using multiplication.
Introduction
Sometimes, it is necessary to check a quotient to a division problem. Multiplication can be used to verify that a quotient is correct.
Marta has 78 stickers to give to her 5 friends. She wants to divide the stickers evenly. She is going to give the remaining stickers to her little brother. How many stickers will each friend get? How many stickers will her brother get?
In this equation:
The
dividend
is
78.
The
divisor
is
5.
The
quotient
is
15.
The
remainder
is
3
.
Each friend will get 15 stickers and her brother will get 3.
Marta wants to be sure that her math is correct. She can check her quotient by using multiplication.
Multiply the quotient by the divisor:
Add the remainder, if there is one:
The sum of 78 is the same as the dividend, which was also 78. The quotient is correct.
