Studies have shown that drivers who use a cell phone while on the road are four times more likely to be in an accident resulting in an injury than those who do not use these devices while driving. When dialing a cell phone, a driver must take his or her eyes off the road for a moment—a moment in which the driver may need to react quickly to an emergency situation. Additionally, a driver can become so absorbed in a conversation that he or she does not pay adequate attention to the road. Some people have argued that using a hands-free cell phone while driving is less hazardous than traditional cell phones. However, even when using hands-free phones, it has been shown that drivers braked 18 percent more slowly than drivers who were paying full attention to their task.
